Madrid Transport Card 2026: the New Empadronamiento Rule and How to Get Your Abono

If you're moving to Madrid in 2026, there's one bureaucratic change you need to know before you land: since June 15, 2026, the monthly public transport card (Abono Mensual) is only available to registered residents of the Community of Madrid. Here's what changed, who it affects, and exactly how to solve it.

This guide was written in collaboration with our partners at CityLife Madrid — the go-to community for internationals in Madrid. Check their original, in-depth resources for even more detail.

What changed in June 2026

The regional transport authority (CRTM) now requires a valid Certificado de Empadronamiento — proof that you're registered as a resident at your Madrid address — before you can order the personal transport card. Applying online without it is no longer possible.

Why it matters: the monthly abono is by far the best deal for anyone living in Madrid — unlimited metro, bus, light rail and Cercanías trains, with heavily discounted rates for under-26s (the famous "Abono Joven"). Losing access to it means paying per ride.

Who is affected

  • Stays under 6 months: registering at the town hall usually requires a housing contract of 6+ months, so short-term students currently can't get the monthly card. Alternative: the 10-trip Multi Card tickets, or the options below.
  • Stays of 6+ months: you CAN get the card — but the order matters. First arrive, then register (empadronamiento), then apply.

The step-by-step for 2026 arrivals

  1. Secure a room with a proper contract — you'll need a written rental contract for the registration. A room contract works: you have the right to register when renting a room. All Tripath rooms come with a digital contract that's valid for this.
  2. Register at your town hall (empadronamiento) — book a cita previa at your district's office, bring passport + rental contract. If you're a Tripath tenant in Madrid on a medium/long stay, we help you prepare the documentation (padrón sheet included).
  3. Apply for the transport card with your empadronamiento certificate — online or at designated offices. The under-26 Abono Joven remains the best deal in European transit.

Alternatives while you wait (or for short stays)

  • Multi Card (10-trip tickets) — no registration needed, shareable between zones A rides.
  • BiciMAD public e-bikes, plus e-scooter and moped rental apps.
  • Cercanías + contactless for regional trips.

Our partners at CityLife Madrid are in direct contact with the CRTM about exceptions for international students — their public transport guide is being updated as the rules evolve, and their WhatsApp community gets notified first.

The bigger picture: your address paperwork now matters more

This rule quietly changed the cost-benefit of informal room rentals: without a real contract you can't register, and without registering you lose the abono (and complicate other paperwork like grant applications or TIE renewals). One more reason to rent through operators that give you a proper digital contract from day one.

FAQ

Can I register (empadronarme) with a room rental contract?

Yes — renting a room gives you the right to register at that address. The town hall may ask for the contract and in some cases extra documentation.

I'm staying one semester (5 months). Am I locked out of the abono?

Under the current rule, most likely yes — use Multi Card tickets for now. Exceptions for students are being negotiated; check CityLife's updates.

Does Tripath help with this?

For our tenants in Madrid on medium/long stays, yes: your contract is empadronamiento-ready and we prepare the documentation you need for the appointment. Browse available rooms.
